The Formula

How Instagram engagement rate is calculated

Standard formula

(Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers x 100

The standard Instagram engagement rate uses follower count as the denominator because it is the metric every account can see publicly, which makes cross-account benchmarking possible. Saves and shares carry extra weight in Instagram's ranking signals because they show intent (saving = revisit later, sharing = recommending to another person).

Some third-party reports (Socialinsider 2026) use a stricter likes-plus-comments-only formula and report lower averages around 0.48%. Hootsuite's January 2025 report uses likes, comments, and shares and reports a 3.5% average. Both are valid. Pick one and stay consistent.

Instagram engagement rate by industry (2025)

Source: Hootsuite Social Media Benchmark Report, January 2025. Methodology: likes + comments + shares divided by followers.

IndustryAvg engagement rate
Cross-industry average3.5%
Construction / Mining / Manufacturing4.4%
Nonprofit4.4%
Education4.2%
Retail / E-commerce3.0% to 3.5%
Tech / SaaS3.0% to 3.5%

For 2026, Socialinsider analyzed 70 million posts and reported a stricter 0.48% median using likes+comments only. The methodology difference, not a real audience collapse, explains the gap.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?

Per Hootsuite's January 2025 Social Media Benchmark Report, the average Instagram engagement rate is 3.5% across industries. Anything between 1% and 3% is roughly average, 3% to 6% is strong, and above 6% is excellent. Hootsuite found industry ranges between 3.0% and 4.4%, with Education, Nonprofit, and Construction sectors at the top end (4.2 to 4.4%). Socialinsider's 2026 report, which uses a stricter likes+comments-only formula, reported a much lower 0.48% median, so always check which formula a benchmark uses before comparing.

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add up likes, comments, saves, and shares on a post, divide by the account's follower count, then multiply by 100. So a post with 150 likes, 12 comments, 25 saves, and 8 shares on a 5,000-follower account is (195 / 5,000) x 100 = 3.9% engagement rate. Some reports use likes and comments only (the original formula). Either is fine, as long as you stay consistent across posts.

Should Instagram engagement be based on followers or reach?

Both are valid. Engagement rate by followers is the industry-standard benchmark (the one Hootsuite, RivalIQ, and Socialinsider report on) because follower count is comparable across accounts. Engagement rate by reach is more accurate for measuring content quality (it removes the inflation of dormant followers) but harder to benchmark because reach is private. Use rate-by-followers for benchmarking against peers. Use rate-by-reach to track whether your content quality is improving over time.

What counts as engagement on Instagram?

The four signals Instagram uses to rank posts are likes, comments, saves, and shares. Saves and shares are weighted more heavily than likes by the algorithm because they signal stronger intent (someone wanted to revisit your post or pass it on). This calculator includes all four in the formula. If you want to compare against a likes-and-comments-only benchmark like Socialinsider's, run the math separately.

What is the average engagement rate for small Instagram accounts under 10K followers?

Small accounts typically see higher rates than mid-size or large accounts because every interaction counts proportionally more. Accounts under 10,000 followers often see 4% to 8% engagement on individual posts, even though the industry-wide average is 3.5%. The drop as accounts grow past 100K is real and expected because the algorithm still serves the same number of engaged viewers, but the denominator gets larger.

Why did my Instagram engagement rate drop?

Common reasons engagement drops: follower count grew faster than active audience (denominator inflation), posting frequency changed, the algorithm shifted, or content stopped matching what your audience saves and shares. The fastest diagnostic is to compare your average engagement on Reels vs static posts vs carousels separately. One format usually carries the others. Track your rate weekly so you can spot a drift before it becomes a cliff.

How can I improve my Instagram engagement rate?

The three highest-leverage moves: (1) use carousels, because every swipe counts as engagement and Instagram re-shows carousels to people who did not swipe the first time; (2) write captions that prompt a save (specific frameworks, checklists, screenshots people will reference later); (3) reply to every comment within the first hour after posting to signal the post is sparking conversation. Format consistency matters more than posting frequency.

How often should I calculate my Instagram engagement rate?

Calculate engagement per post, and average a rolling 30-day window for trend tracking. A single post can spike or tank for reasons unrelated to your content (algorithm tests, time of day, news cycle). The 30-day rolling average smooths those out and shows what your audience consistently engages with. Run the calculator once a week or once a month and log the average. That is the number that matters.
